Boston Stump (St Botolph's Church)

Boston, Boston, my home town
I know I have arrived
When I see from Twenty Miles
The Stump before my eyes!
Towns are there for peoples lives
Towns are there for food
Towns do need their traffic
To be any Good!
It takes a while, it always does
And hair is torn & things look good
Things get worse and then get better
Bypass roads are built, and Tescos!
This is MY CITY Fair and Good
Though it is called a Town
The traffic, it's appalling though
It just goes round and round
People do get fed up though
When the traffic stops
Sometimes when you only want
To go in for the shops
Ah that's not what we expected
Out of town shops are projected
Oh, what happens now we say?
All the traffic's gone away!
To get across the River
Is what you need to do
And there is only one way now
To get the traffic through
Or sometimes when you want to get
In to work or home again
And that blasted traffic
Drives YOU round the bend
All the traffic? Well quite, nearly
Town is quiet, shops are really
Quite surprised and start to worry
No one now is in a hurry!
To go around is tried by some
We have tried some tricks
But never do we seem to save
We end up in the sticks!
Then you may begin to think
Is there a better way?
To organise my life
To organise my day
No one now because there IS none
Shops are dying, markets, all down!
Oh my God, what have we done?
We have killed our lovely town!
But it is not as bad as some
Much better than a lot
The people here, think they know
Do they though? Or do they not?
So people start to make a plan
To build a new road round
To take the traffic out of town
Then we can get around!
This was not supposed to happen
No, oh no, we cannot stop it
It's disaster we have made
Boston is just like the Grave
I have travelled far and wide
Been all over the world
I've seen traffic crawling
That made by big toes curl!
It is so obvious a thing
Why think we not before
Oh such an easy thing to do!
We are so true, and sure!
All those people now do shop
Out of Town and out they stop
Now we like it not at all
We will blame the new Town Hall!
I have seen traffic in big towns
And traffic in the small
The only place they have it not
Sark Island and Nepal!
But then along comes someone
Who's seen this all before
Just like we started out in this
This Poem says it all!
They should have known
They should have stopped it
WE'LL make them suffer now
THEY'VE LOST IT!
But Towns are meant for traffic
Towns are meant to be
Busy, bustling places
Where there's lots to see!
Towns are scattered far and wide
That have this route partaken
Bypass the Town they shout and so
A plan forms and is taken!
