Original Bridge at Saint Ives

Strong Men have Blanched and shot their Wives
Rather than send them to Saint Ives (anon)

Saint Ives was a lovely Market Town
You could buy almost anything there
With market day being twice a week
And sometimes there was a fair
The traffic went away and now
Saint Ives is quiet and calm
At first it seemed we'd been redeemed
But people then took alarm
It was a lively, bustling place
But the traffic was appalling
The route around was twenty miles
So alternatives were galling
The traffic went away and now
They bring in traffic schemes
And parking lots, and mews of shops
To bring more people in
With one bridge over the River Ouse
There was no choice at all
To get from one side to the other
You went through, or not at all
The shops were busy but now they're not
Those that are left grow less
Charity shops we have a lot
And even they are a mess!
We called for a road across the river
A road that would save our lives
It was needed to save the Old Town Bridge
It was needed to save Saint Ives
Save Saint Ives, Save our Bridge
Was this town's clarion call
But neither has been saved from fate
By this great mistake, after ALL
So many a year and many a penny
Went by 'till we got our way
We got the road, we got the bridge
..... And the traffic went away
The people too have gone away
Saint Ives does bustle no more
And the moral to this story is
Think hard what you wish for!
